Holiday Travel Hacks Every Parent Needs to Know
It’s the most wonderful time of the year. But holiday travel your kids can feel like the most stressful time of the year. So arm yourself with a few parent hacks to make everything about the holidays (including the travel) amazing.
- Hack baby-proofing- A pool noodle tucked under the sheets helps make a nice bumper for older kids and band-aids or painter’s tape work great for covering up sockets
- Download a white noise app onto your phone. If the holiday parties are getting loud and make it hard for your little ones to nap or sleep at night, the white noise will help drown out the holiday excitement. You can even make a DIY speaker with a glass cup. Just pop your phone into the cup and it will amplify the sound.
- Get headphones for your kids. Letting your kids watch movies in the car is perfect for long car rides; however, a few hours in the car where you have to listen to your child’s favorite movie over and over can make you go a bit bananas. So if your kids have headphones, they will be happy and you will be happy.
- There’s no need to pack everything you need for your holiday travels. See which items you can have delivered once you reach your destination. Diapers and food are the perfect items to have shipped to your holiday destination using sites like Amazon, Target, and Walmart.
Creative Ways to Entertain Your Toddlers While Traveling During the Holidays
You’ve packed snacks, toys, and electronics, but sometimes you need to be a little creative to keep your littlest travelers entertained in the car. So before you hit the road, here are a few items to be sure to stock up on to your toddlers will be happy the entire trip.
Gel Clings- Before you hit the road, grab a few packs of gel clings-you can find them at the dollar store- and when your little one starts to get bored, let them peel the clings off the paper and place them on the window. They can move the clings over and over again, and when they are done playing, you can simply toss them in the trash. This activity will keep your kids happy travelers.
Pipe Cleaners- A pack of pipe cleaners are inexpensive and can be turned into all sorts of fun shapes and designs-which is perfect for tiny travelers. You can even give your child a small bag of cereal and let them string the cereal onto the pipe cleaner for a fun activity and yummy snack.
Suction Cup Caddies- Just like you don’t want to keep turning around to grab that sippy cup, you don’t want to keep searching for crayons while driving. Head to the dollar store and grab a few small, plastic caddies with suction cups. These are usually meant to be used in the bathroom, but you can attach them to your car widows and load them up with crayons, markers, and stickers. Anytime your child feel creative, they can simply grab what then want from the caddie on the window and hopefully put it back

Many grocery stores now offer a local delivery service, so you won’t have to worry about dealing with crowded stores. Whether you are staying at a family member’s house or staying at a hotel, deliver what you need so you can pack less.
- Pack their entire outfit in a plastic bag. Rather than packing tons of outfits, plan for the number of days you will travel and put each outfit into a plastic bag. This will keep you organized, make sure you don’t over pack, and will help when you need to decide what your little one will wear for the day.
- When you arrive at your destination, quickly access the room you will be staying in for quick baby proofing. But instead of breaking out the baby proofing supplies from home, use a little tape. Use duct tape or blue painters tape to quickly baby proof electric outlets when you arrive. If your little one often tries to take a swim in the toilet, add a little tape so they will stay out but you can get in. In a pinch, band aids can be used to cover electric outlets too.
Tricks to Stay Warm In the Car this Winter
On a hot summer day, it can be painful to get inside a sweltering car-especially if you have kids. However, on a cold day, the inside of a freezing car can be just as miserable. So instead of simply layering up your family or hoping the car warms up before you reach your destination, here’s a few ways you and all your passengers can get the inside of your car feeling toasty and warm.
Since letting your car idle while it warms up inside isn’t great for your car’s engine or if you are trying to make less trips to the gas station, you’ll need to try a few different techniques to get a warmer car.
Consider where you park- If your car is parked outside, aim to park your car where it can get full sunlight. Especially in the morning. So park your car facing east so your car can be warmed by the sun.
You can actually purchase small heaters for the inside of your car to keep everyone feeling warm. This is a great option for families that have early commutes when the weather is the most cold. You can also purchase seat warmers and steering wheel warmers if you are feeling the freeze of the winter months.
How to Keep Your Kids Warm in the Car Without Wearing their Coats
The frigid temperatures of winter are officially here, and even though the cold weather makes us all just want to stay inside and wait until spring—we have to leave the house and our kids are coming with us. While we want to bundle up our little ones in a warm winter coat to keep them toasty and warm, experts agree—kids are safer in car seats without their puffy winter coats.
So why should we put coats on our kids only to take them off as soon as we reach the car? Safety experts say, winter coats can leave the car set harness too loose. So if you are in a crash, the harness will not be effective.
As any parent will tell you, the cold winter months make everyone move slower—especially your kids– and the layering of clothes on your kids can be a real pain. Of course we want our babies to be warm, but we also want them safe. So when the cold temperatures strike, here’s how you can keep you kiddos safe and toasty while in the car.

Tips to Take the Stress of Out of Thanksgiving Travel
For many Americans, Thanksgiving is not only a holiday that is filled with delicious food and great company, but a very stressful time to travel. So before all of the Thanksgiving festivities can start, you’ll need to make your travel plans. From packing, figuring out when is the best time to leave, and actually getting on the road with every other person trying to arrive to their turkey dinner on time, this wonderful holiday can leave you feeling stressed rather than full from turkey. Since we would all rather enjoy pumpkin pie than be stuck in awful traffic, here are a few tips to help you save your sanity if you are traveling this Thanksgiving.
- Take Care of your Car Before Turkey Day- From filling up the gas tank early to making sure everything is running smoothly in your car, take the time before the holiday rush to make sure your car is ready to hit the open road. When you don’t have to stop for gas and wait in busy lines or worry that your car needs serviced on Turkey Day, you’ll be glad you were prepared.
- Be flexible with your Travel Days- While no one wants to be stuck in holiday traffic or long lines at the airport or train station, it seems that is par for the course when it comes to holiday travel-but it doesn’t have to be. If you are hitting the roads for Thanksgiving, try traveling on a day that will be a little less crazy. Most people travel on Wednesday-the heaviest traffic is Wednesday after work- so if you can leave the Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving or even Thanksgiving morning, you are less likely to hit the major holiday rush. The same goes for the days you are returning. Most people head home on Saturday. If you can travel on Friday or Sunday, you are less likely to hit the majority of the traffic. You will still have some traffic, but you will miss the heaviest times.
The Best Hacks to Use When You’re Traveling with Food for Thanksgiving
As we count down the days until we get to dig in to a delicious Thanksgiving dinner, you may be worried about how you are going to travel with the dish you are bringing to dinner. But there’s no need to fret, you just need a few hacks to safely get the yummy food from your house to the Thanksgiving host’s home.
- Use a Crockpot- Not only will the crockpot keep your food warm-think mashed potatoes or sweet potato but it is also the perfect “suitcase” for your side dish. You can even place the slow cooker into a larger box and support it with a few towels so it doesn’t move around during the car ride.
- Use To-Go Containers- If you are going to make some of the food when you arrive, you can chop and cut up the food at home and pack the food in to-go containers-like stuffing ingredients. This way you can cut down on the mess when you arrive.
- Grab Some Towels- Find a few big beach towels and put them in your trunk or wherever you are placing the food. Start by putting towels down on the bottom of the car before you begin packing the food. Then wrap the food containers with more towels so they don’t move or bump into any other dishes while you’re on the road. As an added bonus, you can use the towels for a quick cleanup if anything does spill.
