Fun & Easy Ways To Teach Sight Words At Home

May 16, 2016 by amushro

Since becoming a mom I’ve gotten pretty good at saying “no” all the time. No you cannot have ice cream for breakfast. No you cannot wear your bathing suit to preschool. No you cannot push your sister down the steps in that box. But one thing I rarely say “no” to is when my kids ask me to read another book to them. Even when I’m half asleep snuggled down in their twin beds, I try to keep reading or at least promise to finish the book tomorrow. Luckily I’ve memorized most of the favorites that are on current repeat like the Elephant and Piggie series by Mo Williams and The Day the Crayons Came Home by Drew Daywalt — if you haven’t read these, GO GET THEM!

But what’s even better than snuggling and reading to my kids? Now they’re reading to me and it’s blowing my mind. Seriously, having my son read to us at night while his little sister reads a few words with him — it’s AMAZING. I want to help encourage their reading at home, so that’s why we’re getting creative with sight words.

Sight words are the basic words all kids need to know as they start learning to read. If you’re kids are in school, their teachers are doing all sorts of fun and interesting thing to help teach sight words. But to encourage reading at home and for kindergarten readiness, I wanted easy and fun ways to incorporate sight words into our daily lives that didn’t have me drilling the kids with flashcards and handing over more worksheets—that doesn’t sound like fun. So the idea is keep it simple, don’t overwhelm kids with too many words or they’ll lose interest, and make sure they know the words before you add more. But most importantly keep it fun and remind your kids how awesome they are for learning all these new words.

  • Drag Racing- Because we have approximately 3 million small cars, trucks and trains in this house, there is always some sort of vehicle zooming across the kitchen floor, and so, sight words drag racing was born. Write sight words on small stickers and attach them to the top of the toy cars and trains. Setup races to see who wins. Will it be the “she” convertible or will it be the “then” train? For extra review, create a bracket (like March Madness) and see who will be the ultimate Sight Word Drag Race Winner
  • Go Fish– My kids are basically card sharks when it comes to their favorite game, Go Fish. We swapped out their regular Go Fish cards with notecards that have sight words written on them. Same game with the same rules. Every time you take a turn, be sure to show your card and say the sight word.

  • Nighttime Play – This one is a favorite in our house. I taped all their sight word flashcards to the front of their dressers in their bedrooms. While they are getting ready for bed, we practice the sight words. If they can quickly identify the word, they get to move the card to the side of the dresser. I make a huge deal over how long the list of words is that they know, and it’s just a fun spin on flashcard drills.
  • Shaving cream- Grab a can of cheap shaving cream and squirt a pile on your table. Let your kids paint with the shaving cream and then ask them to write a few sight words. You can even write a few words and see if they know the words you are writing.6d382c002801802f32a491f6969636ee40d4c5e1
  • Scavenger Hunt- This game is so easy and you can throw it together in minutes. Put together a master list of sight words and copy each word onto a post it note. Hang the post it notes all through the house and give your child their master list. Let them run through the house looking for the sight words that match their master list. You can even add a few extra sight words that aren’t on their list to make the game more challenging. Make sure they are saying each word as they find it.

11 Ways Dads Can Help New Moms

May 10, 2016 by amushro

During those early days of having a new baby, I would pass my husband in the morning and at times, I think I startled him with my appearance. Newborns will do that to you: bags under your eyes, unwashed hair, the shirt you’re wearing right now, you wore it yesterday and maybe the day before, and all it takes is something as simple as you can’t find a working pen in your kitchen to send you into an exhausted crying fit. This is usually when my husband (who I’d shoot daggers at if he yawned or mentioned he was tired around me), would see this as an S.O.S. and ask “What can I do to help?” And it was the sweetest sound I had heard in days (other than my baby sleeping).

I know that man wanted to help, but maybe he really didn’t know how or maybe he was just a little scared of me (he had good reason). But I don’t think he was alone with being a new dad and not always knowing what to do to help me as a new mom.

newborn

For instance Boudreaux’s Butt Paste recently surveyed more than 1,000 millennial parents and asked who usually has the dirty job of diaper changing and it looks like mom is doing the heavy lifting. A whopping 95% of women respondents said they do more of the diaper changing than their significant other. So when Dad keeps asking “What can I do to help?” why not just toss him a clean diaper, a few wipes, and Boudreaux’s Butt Paste?

But let’s not just stop with changing diapers, Dad. There are so many more ways you can help your partner and they don’t all involve poop. So for all those new dads and dads-to-be, here’s 11 ways you can really help new moms.

dad helping mom

  • When’s she’s feeding the baby, help her out. If she’s breastfeeding, make sure she has water nearby, her phone, and even a snack. If she’s bottle feeding, offer to be on bottle cleaning duty indefinitely.

  • Let her sleep—really sleep. If you’re taking a feeding at night so Mom can catch up on sleep, let her go into another room so that she won’t hear the baby. You’ll be amazed at how different a few hours of deep sleep will help her.

  • If you have other kids, offer to take them out and keep them busy, bring them home fed, pop them in the tub, and put them to bed. Let her relax and snuggle that new baby and feel zero mom guilt because her other kids are happy and entertained.

  • Take over diaper duty no matter what’s inside that diaper and no matter what time that diaper needs changed. And it would really help if you kept those dry heave sounds to a minimum, Mkay?

  • Tell her how amazing she is doing All. The. Time. She needs a cheerleader. Be her cheerleader.

  • Setup a date night for the two of you. Even if it’s just a night at home with dinner and movie, plan all the details and let her just relax and recharge and reconnect with you.

  • Don’t get angry if the house is a hot mess. Pick up a few extra chores around the house and help clean that hot mess.

  • Be a really good listener and don’t try to fix everything. She might just need to vent. Let her vent to you. Then offer her some cholate and maybe a foot rub. JUST a foot rub. Don’t suggest more. Seriously, just a foot rub.

  • Take care of her and check in to see if she is taking care of herself. Does she need to shower? Does she need a few minutes alone or a night out with her friends? Is she caring for herself? Now that’s she’s a mom, she will put herself last but help her by putting her needs first.

  • Plan for the times you’ll be late at work or if you’re traveling. Can you have her family come and stay if you’re out of town? What about ordering dinner if you’re late and making mealtime easier on her? She will appreciate your thoughtful gestures when your normal schedule changes.

Little Life Hacks for BIG Birthday Surprises

March 18, 2016 by amushro

I’m a firm believer that if your Mamma doesn’t make a HUGE fuss over your birthday, then who will? Now I’m not saying break the bank on every single birthday for over-the-top parties, gifts galore, and food better than what you had at your wedding, but here’s a few super special traditions that let your birthday boy or girl know you think they’re the bees’ knees and some easy Mom Hacks to take the stress out of throwing a birthday party.

4325067a232775efa22e8a2ae88a0b6c32305133

The Big Day Hacks

Decorate Their Door– More than any party or gift, my kids are beyond ecstatic when they wake up on their birthday to find their bedroom doors covered in balloons, crepe paper, and a birthday sign. Decorating the birthday boy or girl’s door while they sleep is inexpensive, super easy, and so worth the payoff when they wake up to see their surprise. Decorated doors are now expected in this house and this year my kids decorated my door for my birthday—seriously, how sweet is that?

2a80177aa5ac057922d8e893ce3c255ae318a325

Cupcake Breakfast- Around here, if it’s someone’s birthday, you can bet there will be cupcakes for breakfast. Is it over the top, yes. Is a cupcake a good food choice for the morning, absolutely not. Is it a special treat your kids will love, you betcha. I have grand visions of sending cupcakes to my kids when they grow up and are off at college. Maybe it will be a reminder to call their Mom Every Single Day.

Birthday Present Scavenger Hunt– Make their birthday morning an adventure by leaving clues so the birthday kiddo has to go on a scavenger hunt in your house to find their present. The first clue can be waiting on their decorated door.

Birthday Party Hacks

6ede48fbd8b63c8f7e3dcfbda212e860bc9c0b9d

Use What You’ve Got- If the party theme is also your child’s favorite toy, use those toys as part of the décor! Put those Octonauts in the punch bowl and let them go for a swim. Create a Hulk Smash cake with a Hulk action figure. Got a Minions crazed kiddo? Use their Minion figures to decorate the food table.

Pain Free Piñata– Confession: I loathe piñatas at parties. I know, I know, that’s a major kid party foul. Bring out a piñata and the kids get all Hunger Games and that paper candy holder usually isn’t the only fallen tribute. Save everyone a few black eyes and tears by filling your piñata with goodie bags rather than individual candy. When the piñata breaks, everyone grabs a bag and I can breathe a sigh of relief the piñata part is over.

Ice Cream Hack- Don’t get mobbed by ice cream hungry kids at your next party. Pre-scoop ice cream into cupcake liners, place them on a cookie sheet or metal baking tray and pop them in the freezer. When it’s time to serve cake and ice cream, you won’t be up to your elbows in the dessert.

Jazz Up The Balloons– Don’t spend a fortune on decor when you can grab bags of balloons from the Dollar Store and get a little crafty by:

  • Adding tiny pom poms to the balloons
  • Putting glow sticks inside for a glow-in-the-dark surprise
  • Attaching the balloon strings to golf tees and lining the yard or driveway for a grand entrance.

Give Store Bought Cakes a Facelift– Save yourself a lot of money by using these tricks to turn ordinary store bought cakes into extraordinary birthday treats

  • Make Glitter Sprinkles with ¼ cup sugar and 2 teaspoon of food coloring. Bake on a cookie sheet for 10 minutes on 350 degree and you will get Glitter Sprinkles! Yes, glitter sprinkles! Cover cakes, cupcakes, and cookies with this sparklely treat.
  • Make fun designs on the cake using a cookie cutter or a Play-Doh Cutter as a stencil. Lay the cutter on the cake and fill the inside with colorful sprinkles. So cute!
  • Add Jell-O to white frosting to change the flavor and add a rainbow of colors to your next cake
  • Make your own cake topper by finding free images online and printing them on cardstock. Cut the images out, attach tiny skewers, and place the skewers in the cake for a special 3-D look

Balloon Drop- Want to hear the sounds of sheer joy? Create a balloon drop by taping two a plastic table clothes together with painter’s tape (the kind that is sticky but not too sticky). Attach a few long strings on the end of the seam. Attach the table clothes to the ceiling or a ceiling fan and fill with balloons. When you are ready for the drop, one good pull on the strings will make it rain balloons. Yay balloons!

Birthdays should just be really, really, really fun. After all, you’re a mom and that means you probably won’t get to blow your own candles out ever again. And, I’m OK with that.

12 Packing Hacks For Your Next Trip

February 25, 2016 by amushro

This week the kiddos and I are in Florida and we are taking on Universal Studios and Lego Land. Right now, I’m not sure who is more excited, me or the kids. Seriously, I cannot wait to hug a Minion. So even though we are hitting the ground running all over the parks today, as all parents know, the real work happens before the trip: all the planning, all the silent prayers no one gets sick, and of course, all the packing. Since my husband wasn’t traveling with us this time, I wanted to make everything super easy on myself. So that meant one large suitcase for the three of us rather than me trying to juggle kids, carry-ons, and three suitcases. Since I tend to be an over packer,  I had to get creative to make everything fit. It sort of became a grown up game of Tetris in my suitcase. But sometimes just making everything fit just isn’t enough and I knew I needed to find some amazing life hacks to make this packing a whole lot easier.

So if you  have a trip planned, you’ll want to check out my 12 packing hacks. Click right here to be magically transported to the article!
